She is visibly agitated, and as the monkey tentatively reaches up to take her hand, she slaps his paw away before it even makes contact. He snatches his paw back, a frightened expression on his face as Mrs Coulter walks away without a backward glance. The Golden Monkey slowly, warily, lowers himself onto all fours, flicking his tail up from the floor and curling it over his back before gazing up at her retreating figure and following — but she has already left him behind.
